NASA chair

This chair is notable in two ways. One, it’s the largest single piece of bendwood used to make a chair, and two, it’s the only chair tested by NASA and certified by The Space Foundation.

Of course, it’s also a sweet chair. Your body is cushioned by open cell visco elastic memory foam, used on NASA’s spacecrafts, and looks conducive to some serious nap action. No price that we can find, so contact Lyx for a quote.

seat-duna-by-miguel-angel-iranzo-sanchez-thumb-550x413-17527

Not too long ago, Spanish designer Miguel-Angel Iranzo Sanchez showed off the Seat Brisa, which was essentially a solar-powered love seat. Now he’s designed the Brisa’s successor, the Duna, which comes off looking a bit more like a car with its substantial backside, but keeps the solar panels embedded in the hood.

From the designer:

The Seat Duna is an electric beach buggy designed to provide old-fashioned fun in an eco way. Based on the Volkswagen Up! platform, the Seat Duna is propelled by an electric motor fed by nano-photovoltaic cells scattered throughout its translucent elastomere shell. With its lightweight mesh seats, laminated cedar rocker panels inspired by vintage surfboards, and bright colors, the Seat Duna is a quite extrovert car.

How’s a car concept in olden days? Have you thought of that? Yeah, this is the concept car from 1980 called Citroën Karin, a concept by Trevor Fiore in 1980. It is a three-seater car.

The Mini Sky Umbrella($34.95) is an interesting product. It features the auto-open, auto-close function that is great for those of us who are constantly toting too much around to devote two hands to our umbrella. The 38-inch span of the Mini Sky Umbrella is plenty to cover two people. When collapsed, the mini design is only about 11 inches long, so it can fit easily into a purse or small work bag.

alkeo_cuttingboard

A surefire way of sanitizing your kitchen cutting board is to add chlorine to the rinsing water every once in a while; sadly who’s got the time for it! We basically soap it thoroughly and rinse it off hoping that the bacteria are washed away and are not having a picnic out there! About 76 million cases of food-borne illness, most of which are caused by bacteria inhabiting uncooked food or contaminated cooking surfaces, are reported every year. Hopefully the UV enabled Alkeo will not let us become another statistic.

Although many consider plastic boards to be safer bet, the truth is that maintaining a hygienic cutting board is difficult. Alkeo is a kitchen-top device that uses a medical-grade germicidal UV lamp to destroy bacteria and viruses on the sturdy polycarbonate cutting board that accompanies it. Basically, after you’re done with your chopping, you simply push the board through the slot on top of Alkeo and let the UV do its destructive action. Although this device may give you the satisfaction of a sterilized cutting board, it may be wise to follow the adage “When in doubt, throw it out”; when considering discarding an old board.

Victorinox celebrates the 125th anniversary of the Swiss Army Knife with this 1884 limited-edition travel alarm clock. Just like the famous folding knives, this gorgeous timepiece uses the same steel spring mechanism, folding out with a reassuring snap.

Carrying on that clever theme, there’s even a pair of tweezers and a toothpick embedded within. You’ll have to wait until November to get this collector’s item in your hands, and all this exquisite design and rarity doesn’t come cheap — its $550.

mountain-2

Showed at milan design week 09, Montanara is a very creative piece of furniture designed by Gaetano Pesce. It is the coolest themed couch design that I’ve ever seen. Designer creates the illusion of a mountain scene right in your living room, including cushion waterfalls and jagged support peaks of doom.
